Using Video Wall on Windows

Everything the Windows app does, button by button. Not set up yet? Start with Windows setup.

See every camera at once

The sidebar on the left lists All Cameras, Activity, your groups, and every camera on the account. The wall on the right shows whichever of those you pick. Resize the window and the grid refits itself.

  • A red dot beside a camera in the sidebar means it’s live right now. Click a camera there to open it. Right-click it for Open in New Window, Show History, Add to Group and Hide from Wall.
  • Hover a tile for Show History, Open in New Window and Play Sound (sound from that camera on the wall; one plays at a time). Double-click a tile to open the camera. Arrow keys move the highlight and Enter opens it.
  • Drag a tile to a new spot to reorder the wall. Right-click a tile for snapshots, Live Mode, Add to Group, Move Up, Move Down and Hide from Wall.

Use the toolbar

  • Show or hide the sidebar — top left (Ctrl+Alt+S).
  • Start Auto-Cycle — tours your cameras full screen, one at a time (Ctrl+Alt+P). ← and → skip, Space pauses, and Esc or Done ends it. The interval and the cameras in the rotation are in Settings › Auto-Cycle. See Auto-Cycle.
  • History — top right: the panel of recent events for the selected camera (Ctrl+Alt+I). More under Activity and History.
  • Settings — every setting on one page (Ctrl+,). Your name, beside it, has Account… and Sign out.

The View menu has the rest: Layout (Grid, every tile the same size, or Featured, the first camera large and the rest beside it), Show Camera Names (Ctrl+Alt+N), Camera Fit (Auto, Fit or Fill) and Tile Spacing. The same settings live in Settings › Wall.

Open, zoom and pan a camera

Double-click a tile and that camera fills the window. Scroll to zoom (up to 6×), drag to pan, and double-click to zoom back out. The bar above the picture has the camera’s own buttons:

  • Back — to the wall (Esc).
  • Previous Camera — and Next Camera (Ctrl+[ and Ctrl+]).
  • Unmute — plays this camera’s audio; Mute stops it (Ctrl+Shift+M). Settings › Wall can play sound whenever you open a camera.
  • Copy Snapshot — copies the current frame to the clipboard (Ctrl+Shift+C).
  • Save Snapshot… — saves it as a picture (Ctrl+S).
  • History — this camera’s recent events.
  • Open in New Window — pops the camera into its own window (Ctrl+Alt+O), below.

Full Screen in the View menu (F11) fills the screen with the wall or the open camera; Esc leaves. If a camera says Live view ended, Ring has rested it to save power; click Resume.

Keep a camera on top of other apps

A camera in its own window is a window like any other: put it in a corner, on another monitor, or beside the document you’re working in. Open as many as you like. Hover one for its three buttons:

  • Float on Top — keeps the window above every other app, so it stays visible while you work in something else. Stop Floating on Top undoes it.
  • Play Sound — this camera’s audio, in this window.
  • Show in Wall — brings the main window forward with this camera.

A doorbell ring can open the doorbell’s camera in a floating window by itself, with sound — that’s under Notifications. This is the Windows version of Picture in Picture.

Use Video Wall from the taskbar

The Video Wall icon sits in the notification area by the clock (it may be under the ^ arrow). It keeps running after you close the wall window, and it’s what keeps notifications coming.

  • Click the icon to open the wall.
  • Right-click it for Open Video Wall, Enter Kiosk Mode, Mute, Start Auto-Cycle, Settings… and Quit Video Wall.
  • Turn the icon off with Show Video Wall in the notification area in Settings › General. Open Video Wall at login, just above it, starts the app with Windows.

Add a clock, weather and activity

A Clock, the Weather for a US ZIP code, and Recent activity can sit in the grid as tiles beside your cameras. Turn them on in Settings › Widgets, where the clock has a light or dark style and the weather takes a ZIP code and Fahrenheit or Celsius. Right-click a widget to move, hide or remove it. See Widgets.

Sort cameras into groups

A group is a wall of its own: the front yard, the shop floor, the cameras a second monitor should show. Click New Group in the sidebar and name it, then right-click cameras and choose Add to Group. Each group keeps its own order and its own Grid or Featured layout. Right-click a group to Rename it, change its Icon or Layout, or Delete Group. Groups are also in Settings › Groups, with a list of cameras to tick.

Look back at recent events

Activity

Activity in the sidebar is the latest motion and doorbell events across your cameras, newest first, with a thumbnail of each. The play button plays the clip; the save button saves it to your PC.

History

History in the toolbar (Ctrl+Alt+I) opens a panel of the selected camera’s own events, filtered by All, Doorbell, People, Packages or Motion. Click an event to play it; right-click for Play Clip and Save Clip….

A clip plays in the app; Space pauses it and Save… saves the video to your PC. Clips need a Ring Protect plan — see Recording & history.

Get doorbell and motion alerts

Turn on Notify me on this PC in Settings › Notifications and Windows shows a notification, with a picture, for the kinds of event you choose — Doorbell rings, People, Packages, Vehicles, Animals, Other motion — from the cameras you choose, under What to notify about. Send test checks that Windows is letting them through.

  • Open the doorbell camera when someone rings opens the doorbell’s camera in a floating window with sound, so you see who’s there without leaving what you’re doing.
  • Open the camera on motion does the same, without sound, for the kinds of motion and the cameras you picked above.

Notifications arrive while Video Wall is running; keep the notification-area icon on to get them with the wall closed. Your phone’s Ring alerts are unaffected.

Why a camera says PAUSED

Live view stops when no camera window is visible, so your Ring alerts keep working, and a tile says PAUSED while that’s the case. Battery cameras and doorbells can also be set to Auto under Live Mode (right-click the tile, or Settings › Cameras), which pauses when Ring ends the stream so they stay free to alert; see Streaming mode.

Turn a spare monitor into a camera wall

View › Enter Kiosk Mode (Ctrl+Shift+D) fills the screen with the wall, edge to edge, with no sidebar or toolbar, and hides the pointer when it isn’t moving. Esc or Ctrl+Shift+D leaves.

For a spare PC or monitor that should always be a camera wall:

  1. In Settings › General, turn on Use this PC as a kiosk and open it.
  2. Pick the Monitor. Turn on Start Auto-Cycle if you want it to tour the cameras, and Hide the pointer when it’s not moving.
  3. Turn on Open Video Wall at login. From the next start, the wall opens in Kiosk Mode on that monitor. Try it now shows it straight away.

Keep the display awake while cameras are showing, in the same section, stops the screen sleeping while the wall is up.

The app opens videowall:// links, so a desktop shortcut, a Stream Deck button, Task Scheduler or a script can bring up a camera. If the app is already running, the link goes to it.
